Overview

The Ausangate trek 5 days is the most challenging and fantastic hike that you can find in the Cusco region. The path is physically demanding, it is considered a high altitude walk, you walk on the 5,000 meters above sea level /16404 feet, and the camps are on the 4,400 meters above sea level /14435 feet.

The 5-day Ausangate hiking route + the 7-color mountain is very rugged with earth and stones, but this hike will offer you a spectacular and beautiful landscape of the Puna region, where glaciers and mountains of colors will surround your field visual. Bordering colorful lagoons and Andean Camelids will escort you in parts of the walk.

The prevailing climate will be cold, passing nights below -0°C / 32°F and during the day the temperature will reach approximately 15°C / 59°F. Description

Summary of the Ausangate Trek

First day: Cusco – Tinki – Pajchanta – Qomerqocha

  • At 7:00 a.m., our staff will go through your hotel in Cusco and then, you will travel by bus to Pajchanta (3 and a half hours)
  • Before lunch, relax in the hot springs.
  • 12:00 hours. Taste the delicious dishes of our chef.
  • 1:30 in the afternoon. Start the trek to the Qomerqocha camp
  • 5:30 pm. hot drink hour
  • 6:30 pm. enjoy your delicious dinner and overnight at the campsite

Second Day. Qomerqocha – Jhampa Pass – Jhampa Pampa – Huchuy Phinaya

  • 5:30 am. The cook will wake you up with a hot drink (coca, coffee, tea, etc.)
  • 6:00 am. Enjoy your first breakfast prepared by our professional chef
  • 7:00 am. Start of the trek to the first highest point, Jhampa pass (5,010 meters / 16,437 feet)
  • 12:00 hours. Enjoy the second lunch in Jhampa Pampa
  • 1:00 p.m., continue the hike to the Huchu Phinaya camp
  • 4:00 p.m. Arrival to Huchuy Phinaya, hot drink, dinner, and overnight in the campsite.

Third Day: Huchuy Phinaya – Palomani Pass – Ausangate Qocha – Ananta (Auki)

  • 5:30 am. The cook will wake you up with a hot drink (coca, coffee, tea, etc.)
  • 6:00 am. Enjoy your second breakfast prepared by our expert chef
  • 7:00 am. Start of the hike to the highest point of the route, Palomani pass (5210 meters / 17010 feet)
  • 12:00 hours. Lunch at Ausangate Qocha
  • 3:00 p.m. Arrival at the Ananta camp (Auqui)
  • 5:30 p.m. hot drink hour
  • 6:30 p.m. Dinner and overnight in the campsite

Fourth Day: Ananta – The 7-color mountain – Ananta – Yana Qocha

  • 5:00 a.m. The chef will wake you up with a hot drink (coca, coffee, tea, etc.)
  • 6:30 a.m. Enjoy your third breakfast prepared by our chef
  • 6:00 am. Start of the walk to the 7-color mountain
  • 8:30 a.m. Arrival to the rainbow mountain
  • 10:00 a.m. Start of return to the Ananta camp
  • 12:30 hours. Enjoy your fourth lunch
  • 1:30 p.m. Start of the second part of the walk
  • 4:30 p.m. Arrival at the camp of Yana Qocha

Fifth Day: Yana Qocha – Arapa pass – Upis Community – Cusco.

  • 5:30 am. Have your last breakfast
  • 6:00 am. Complete the last part of the tour
  • 10:00 a.m. Arrival to the Upis community and before having your last lunch. Relax in the thermal healing waters.
  • 1:00 pm. Farewell of all the team of the expedition
  • 6:00 pm. Arrival in Cusco

Note. All the hours shown in the previous lines are approximations, this will vary depending on how the group progresses on the route.

Itinerary

First Day: Cusco – Tinki – Pajchanta (4,320 meters / 14,173 feet) – Qomerqocha (4,590 meters / 15,059 feet).

To start this beautiful adventure. The professional guide specialized in trekking assigned by the Matours Agency will pass by your hotel in Cusco at 7:00 a.m., then travel in a private van to Pajchanta community. Before your first lunch and hiking, relax in the thermal medicinal waters.

In the afternoon, start 2 and a half hour hike to the Qomerqocha Lagoon. Lagoon located between huge snow-clad mountains, also place where you will have enough time to take excellent photographs, and you will spend your first night of camping.

Second Day. Qomerqocha – Paso Jhampa (5,010 meters / 16,437 feet) – Huchuy Phinaya (4,510 meters / 14,793 feet).

Today, you will wake up between the enormous snow-capped mountains and with breathtaking panoramic views. Take your first fantastic breakfast at 6:00 a.m. then, begin to ascend following an ancient path at a slow pace to Jhampa pass. From where you will have beautiful panoramic views of the snow-clad mountains chain. Then, begin to descend to Jhampa Pampa, where you will enjoy a delicious lunch. After, continue downhill for 2 and a half hours through a deep valley full of alpacas and llamas until you reach Huchuy Phinaya, where you will spend the second night of camping.

Third Day: Huchuy Phinaya – Palomani Pass (5,210 m / 17,010 ft) – Ausangate Qocha – Ananta (4,650 m / 15,252 ft)

Today, you will wake up in the foothills of the highest mountain in the Cusco region, Ausangate (6,370 meters) and you will also pass to the highest point of the entire Ausangate trek 5-day, the Palomani Pass.

Have your breakfast at 6:00 a.m. then, start climbing towards the Palomani pass, from where you will enjoy splendid views in 360°, you will also have a breathtaking view of the Sacred Mountain (Inca’s time) and in the tour, you will be able to witness vicuñas in their natural habitat at more than 5 thousand meters of altitude.

After admiring the beauty of nature, begin to descend to Ausangate Qocha where you will enjoy a delicious lunch. Then continue with the gentle hike to Ananta where you will spend your third night of the expedition.

As always, at 5:30 p.m. You will enjoy a hot drink and at 6:30 p.m. will have dinner.

Fourth Day: Ananta – The 7-color mountain (5030 meters / 16,502 feet) – Ananta – Abra Chillka (4,990 meters / 16,371 feet) – Yana Qocha (4,490 meters / 14,727 feet).

Today is a crucial day because you will visit the busiest and most colorful place of this Ausangate trek 5 days.

To be the first tourists to visit the 7-color mountain, take your breakfast at 5:30 a.m. and start walking at 6 in the morning. The hike will take you 2 and a half hours to the rainbow mountain and when you get to the viewpoint, take excellent pictures and finally return by same way to the Ananta camp where our expedition cook will be waiting for you with an energetic lunch.

After lunch, at approximately 2 p.m. complete the second part of today’s walk to the Yana Qocha camp. While you walk along this stretch, nature will not fail to surprise you, from Chillca step you will have impressive views of colorful lagoons and behind them will be the Ausangate Mountain.

As usual at 5:30 p.m., enjoy your hot drink and dinner at 6:30 p.m.

Fifth Day: Yana Qocha – Abra Arapa (4,740 m / 15,551 ft) – Upis Community (4,415 m / 14,484 ft) – Cusco.

Have the last breakfast of your adventure at 6:00 a.m., then start to enjoy the last part of Ausangate Trek 5 days. The hike to the Upis community will take you 4 hours at a slow pace. Before lunch, visit the hot springs, which will be an excellent relaxation after an arduous hike.

After your last lunch, catch your exclusive mobility to the city of Cusco. But before starting a trip of 3 and a half hours, you have to say goodbye to the team of the expedition (muleteers and the cook)

Arrival at the city of Cusco – hotel at approximately 6 p.m.
